My suggestion for getting people involved is to create a list of SM topic areas such as marketing, PR, comm mgt, web strategy, etc & have leadership within your board. Then identify sub members from various regions/locales to participate. This would allow many more to participate, distribute the work as well as spread your cause nationally & worldwide (if that's the goal).

My major priority project is a Facebook/LinkedIn/CollectiveX group called YAP, (Young Association Professionals), which I started to help support young professionals within the association/non-profit industry – it’s social and it’s also meant to be a sandbox for innovation. In fact it’s a LOT like SMC! Our tagline is “eternally beta” and the concept is like Fight Club – there will be an outpost in every city, where people can find someone to go hang out with if they are travelling alone somewhere, and they can get to know one another online and find creative ways to support each other professionally, as well as explore how social media can create value for their organizations. (Only the first rule of YAP is you always talk about YAP… hehe)

The other one is NTEN and Beth Kanter’s WetheMedia project which I am sure you know all about. (http://www.diaryofareluctantblogger.com/2008/07/we-are-media-social-media-starter-kit.html)
Both of these are about collaboration, support and information, in different ways, so I am sure that any linking with SMC would not involve anything more than spreading the word and getting people more involved. The goals, I am sure, are similar to most of your projects!
